Service Wing & Kitchen

A long, angled corridor off the Central Courtyard leads to the Service Wing of the estate which includes a large kitchen and pantry, silver closets, storage areas, a laundry room and several staff bedrooms which now serve as offices. The Kitchen retains much of its original appearance including original appliances, which continue to function to this day. A truly eclectic mix of dinnerware can be found in the kitchen cabinets including services made in China, Japan, Morocco, Palestine, France, Italy, Austria, Iran, England, and the United States.

Doris Duke made use of most areas of her home to store or showcase her collection of Islamic art. An intriguing collection of silver is found in the Service Wing area as well as papier-mache and inlaid metal trays from Kashmir and India, and several beautiful carved doors from 16th thru 19th-century Iran.

When she entertained, Doris Duke ate in the Dining Room. However, if she went out at night, she often ate a casual late-night snack in the Kitchen upon her return to Shangri La. Homemade binders of recipes show that her taste in cuisine was as internationally eclectic as her dinnerware.
