Shahzia Sikander

November 15 - December 1, 2008

Shahzia Sikander's art responds to the tradition of Indo-Persian miniature painting with wit, irony, and paradox. She was originally trained in the genre in Lahore, Pakistan and has had solo exhibitions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2007), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney Australia (2007-08) and at Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK (2008). Her 2004 exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum was partially supported by a grant from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. She presented a free public lecture at the University of Hawai’i on November 19, 2008.

Shahzia Sikander returned to Shangri La in late 2011 to complete her work of projecting images of her artwork – paintings, calligraphy and decorative borders – onto the architecture and landscape by night (interview). These large scale projections and photographs add a dynamic, colorful and contemporary element to Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art.
