During this year’s closure, enjoy Shangri La & Chill!

Every year, Shangri La closes to the public to perform important conservation, maintenance and landscaping work. What will we be doing during this year? Making improvements to the front entrance, repaving a portion of the main driveway, termite tenting, gallery rotations, collections photography, and so much more!

Greetings and salutations! 😁Every year, Shangri La closes to the public to perform important conservation, maintenance and landscaping work. What will we be doing during this year? Making improvements to the front entrance, repaving a portion of the main driveway, termite tenting, gallery rotations, collections photography, and so much more! To complete this work, we will be closed from Monday, September 24 through Saturday, November 24, and will reopen for public tours on Wednesday, November 28. Visit the Shangri La tour page at our partner museum, Honolulu Museum of Art for information about public tours after we reopen.

Even though there will not be any tours during this time, we are not “ghosting” you! 👻We have planned some exciting off-site and online programs so you can continue to enjoy the Shangri La experience. We call this suite of programs: “Shangri La & Chill.” 😎🌊☀️🌴

First, our new Youtube channel will feature content from past scholars, artists, musicians, and performers, as well as new content from our recent artists-in-residence. Subscribe to see new video content each week during our closure.

Later this month, we will host our first Instagram “crowd-sourced” exhibition – where YOU get to choose which object will be featured in our Art of Looking exhibition series. Voting will take place during the week of Sept 24-28 on our Instagram Stories. ✅Follow us on Instagram to cast your vote!

In October, we are organizing a free and fascinating off-site discussion about preserving cultural heritage in conflict zones featuring our Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Dr. Leslee Michelsen, and our Conservator, Kent Severson. Leslee has spent time in Afghanistan and Kent just returned from cultural recovery efforts in Iraq. In November, we will host another off-site listening party–Listening While Muslim: the B Side–with our Associate Curator of Programs, Asad Ali Jafri. The first Listening While Muslim party was a great success. Stay tuned for more details on how to get tickets for these upcoming events!

Okay – that was a lot of information, but Shangri La & Chill is about the fun ways to continue to have the Shangri La experience when there are no tours. For the latest updates, follow us on Facebook and Instagram or join our email newsletter! 🤙
