News Release: Shangri La Announces Fall 2019 Exhibitions and Programs
HONOLULU, September 30, 2019 - Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design announces its upcoming exhibitions and residencies after a month-long closure for annual maintenance, conservation and curatorial work. Two new exhibits of artworks from the museum collection, and two residencies with award-winning artists, will debut at Shangri La after the museum reopens on October 3, 2019.
Beginning on October 3, 2019, two exhibitions showcasing the breadth of the museum’s collection of Islamic art: one of rarely seen folios depicting royal women from South Asia, and another of Indonesian masks from the museum’s collection, will be on view to the public. An innovative program celebrating Javanese and Balinese performing arts will take place on October 5, 2019.
From October 15-30, 2019, Shangri La will host Papermoon Puppet Theatre. The three-person troupe, based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, will create and perform an original production at Shangri La using astonishingly lifelike puppets. Papermoon has toured more than 10 countries and launched the international puppet biennial, Pesta Boneka.
From November 6-17, 2019, Shangri La will host Studio Revolt, an artist-run media lab launched in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Studio Revolt co-founder and performance artist, Anida Yoeu Ali, along with filmmaker Masahiro Sugano, will debut their performance piece, Red Chador: Genesis I, during this residency.
