Shangri La was pleased to present Suzani: A Weaving of Traditions, a contemporary, genre-defying dance performance with original choreography created by Dr. Anita Vallabh, nā kumu hula Vicky Holt Takamine and Jeff Takamine. Performed by Vallabh and members of Holt's dance troupe Pua Ali`i `Ilima, Suzani: A Weaving of Traditions combines thematic influences from Sufi poetry and philosophy with Hula and Bharatanatyam dance traditions.
Dr. Anita Vallabh, an Artist-in-Residence at Shangri La from February 11-27, 2013, is a Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer and teacher from Chennai, India, who has performed internationally throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. She was trained in the classical traditions by Smt. Shanta and Sri. V.P. Dhananjayan and was the recipient of the National Award for the Best Dancer (1992-1993) from the National Hindi Academy, Calcutta. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Madras in 2002. Vallabh is the creative director of Aeka Academy, a holistic performing arts centre.
Vicky Holt Takamine is the founder and kumu hula (master teacher) of Pua Ali'i 'Ilima, a school of traditional Hawaiian dance. She is also the co-founder and kumu hula of Papa Laua'e o Makana on Kaua'i Island and co-founder and Executive Director for PA'I Foundation on Oahu Island. Holt received her MA in Dance Ethnology from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Jeff Takamine 'uniki (formally graduated) as kumu hula in 2007.
