Ayodele Drum and Dance

Chicago-based performing artist collective Ayodele Drum and Dance was featured in a Shangri La Residency from February 14-23, 2020. “Ayodele” is a Yoruba word that means “joy in the home” and the sister-circle collective of performing artists fosters community from a feminine perspective through diasporic African drum and dance, using the artform to heal, educate and motivate in an unending circle firmly rooted in joy.

Artists-in-residence, Ayodele Drum and Dance, will transform the museum with their jubilant performances of music and dance. “Ayodele” is a Yoruba word that means “joy in the home” and this diverse sister-circle collective of performing artists based in Chicago uses African drum and dance to heal, educate and motivate in an unending circle firmly rooted in joy. The troupe will be joined by Honolulu-based musicians, Sekou Camara and Moussa Bangora. Originally from Guinea, this duo grew up in a griot family that has kept the tradition of musical storytelling alive for many generations.
